Department of Community Medicine

King Edward Medical school was established in 1878 at Indore. In the years till school was converted to Medical College in 1947 this subject was called Public Health and Hygiene. In 1956 the subject was changed to Preventive and Social Medicine (P.S.M.).

The department of P.S.M. which later on was renamed Community Medicine was established in 1956. The founder Professor Dr. M.C. Mittal M.D. (Medicine and M.P.H. (Harward 1955) established this department. This department is one of the pioneer department of P.S.M. not only in India but also in South East Asia. In last fifty years luminaries such as Late. Prof. J.E. Park, Late. Prof. M.P. Dwevedi, Prof N.K. Vaidya, Prof. A.K. Govila, Prof. M. Ketkar and Prof. Mrs. S.Upadhyaya were faculty members. Present Head of Department. Prof. R.K. Chandorkar, who is also Consortium Professor for Tulane Medical School, New Orleans, Usa took charge in 1994.

In this department various projects related to Public health have been undertaken from its inception. Present Professor and Head of department Dr. R.K. Chandorkar, Joined the department in 1981 and became professor in 1991 at Raipur and came to Indore Medical college in 1994, form 1966 onwards various projects have been taken up in the department. In 1966-97a consortium of this department with Tulane Medical School, Tulane University, New Orleans USA for developing Health Systems Management and Research was established.

Presently the department has full faculty who are experts in the field of Preventive and Social Medicine and Health Systems Management and other allied subjects

C.M.E. Programme/ Research Studies/Projects undertaken:
    • A study  “To Evaluate Cadmium Exposure among Gold Jwellery Workers employed in Sarafa Market of Indore District” conducted by Department of Community Medicine, MGMMC Indore and Labour Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh during April 2009.
    • Facility Survey of RTI / STI Clinics of 14 districts of Indore and Ujjain Divisions of Madhya Pradesh’ conducted by MGM Medical College Indore in collaboration with Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Society during January 2009
    • Coordinated four Divisional Level Orientation and Training Workshops for NRC staff of Indore and Ujjain divisions of Madhya Pradesh organized by the Department of Community Medicine, MGMMC Indore and UNICEF Bhopal .
    • One day Orientation in leprosy of Medical students on 25 September 2009  sponsored by TLM (The leprosy mission) and detailed  lectures were delivered by various specialists from Skin department, orthopedic department, Ophthalmology, Preventive and Social Medicine.
    • CME was organized on Polio Surveillance . Main speaker was Dr. Lt. Col Arvinder Narula who is STATE COORDINATOR for polio surveiilance.
    • On 1st Dec ,Sensitization of  M.B.B.S. students was done on AIDS by Dr. V.P. Pandey (proff.  Medicine), Dr. S.S.Sharma (Astt . Proffessor Medicine).
    • On 5th feb Seminar was organized covering detailed guidelines of IMNCI for undergraduate medical students.
    • A Workshop cum meeting on Diagnosis and Management of H1N1 was held in the department on    .It was attended by Proff & Head Medicine, Proff & Head Microbiology,CMHO’s,Nodal officers, All administrative and microbiology incharges.
 
Research Projects

  3. A research project “ Utilization of united funds at the Sub-center Level in Indore division Under NRHM” was conducted by deptt. from 1st Nov to 15th December 2007. Dr. Sanjay Dixit principal Investigator.Dr. Salil sakalle & Dr. Madhav Bansal were Co- Principal Investigator.They were duly assisted by all the staff members & PGS of Department.
  4. A research project titled “ A Base-Line Survey to Strengthen PPTCT services for GOVT OF M.P.” was Undertaken by Our department in districts of Indore,Ujjain, Mandsaur from 20th December 2007 – 5th January 2008 with DR. Sanjay Dixit as principal Invetigators.
  5. A project on “Quick Appraisal of supplementary Nutrition in 3 Aganwadi in Urban Indore under ICDS Scheme” was conduted Between 11th – 20th January with dr. Sanjay Dixit as PI & Dr. Khatri &  Dr. Madhav Bansal were the Co- Principal Investigators.
  6. Presently ICMR has Sanctioned a project for Evaluating tribal health in Respect to Blood levels of essential Nutrient factors ,Trace elements And Minerals. The project population belongs to 30 selected Villages of Gandhwani Block, Dhar Districts.
  7. Under NRHM Evaluation  of utilization of United Funds sanctioned to subcenter of Indore division was studied and Published.
  8. A multistage screening study was done on jewelry workers of Indore sarafa Especially   to study hazards of chronic exposure to Cadmium as sponsored By Labour Deptt. GOvt OF M.P..
  9. Need Assessment Study on 150 people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) in INDORE, Neemuch And Ujjain Districts as sponsored by NACO.
  10. A study to evaluate effects of Mobile Phone Overuse(NOMOPHOBIA) among 200 Medical students.

  • Dr. Sanjay Dixit was awarded by District Administration for his excellent contribution in efficient management of crisis of Dengue and Swine Flu in the city.
  • Dr. Gunjan Taneja (P.G. Student) is awarded NACO Fellowship under National AIDS Control Program (NACP)- Phase III Fellowship programme for MD, PhD and MPhil students for conducting the “Need Assessment Study on People Living With HIV / AIDS” at the ART Center of MGM Medical College & MY Hospital Indore.

This department is nodal department for epidemiological investigation for unusual epidemiological public health problems in Indore and Ujjain Divisions of Madhya Pradesh. Such 20 to 25 investigations have been carried out in last 10 years.

PRESENT PROJECTS UNDERHAND

1. Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Tulane University Medical School New orleans USA and the Department of Community Medicine, M.G.M. Medical College, Indore, Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalay for faculty Exchange programme.

Attended five month Diploma in health Systems management Courses and were awarded Postgraduate Diploma in Health Systems management.

2. Postgraduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health (PGDMCH) course in being started in the department under UMP Bhoj Open University affiliation. From July 2001, Prof. R.K. Chandorkar is the regional coordinator for the course.

3. Department of Community Medicine has been identified as a collaborative center for Dr. A.K. Bhagwat and dr. S.B.  Bansal are trained as master trainers.

4. Dr. R.K. Chandorkar, professor head, has been appointed as Chairman of Scientific Advisory Committee of RMRC, Jabalpur (ICMR)

5. Department of Community medicine in collaboration with Population Foundation of India and Ranbaxy health Care Society, Dewas has started a project on "strengthening of reproductive and Child health care delivery System in Dewas District

6. The department has organized a workshop for medical students on 10th to 12th Sept. 2001 in collaboration with Dreyfus Foundation New York &Health action by people: Trevendrum. 130 students of prefinal MBBS will participate and later do research projects. Under "Problem solving for Better health"last year 100 students have been trained in this scheme.

7. Dr. Sanjay Dixit was appointed as regional coordinator HIV/AIDS surveillance for M.P. and has made supervisory visits to 15 sentinel centers and presented the report of M.P. HIV surveillance at the regional coordinator meetings at Mumbai and New Delhi.

8. Faculty of Medical College, dental College and Nursing College and Nurses, Technicians and Para Medical Workers of institutions attached to Medical College indore is to be trained in coming six months under the NACO and State AIDS Society Bhopal.

All the Faculty members of Community Medicine department have been already trained as trainers of AIDS.
